Here are some answers to your frequently asked questions about massage:

What should I expect during my first massage therapy visit?
We will ask you to complete a confidential health history form. Afterwards we will ask you some general questions to find out what areas you would like worked on during your massage and if there are any conditions needing to be addressed.

Where will my massage session take place?
Your massage session will take place in a warm, comfortable, quiet room. Soft music will be played to encourage relaxation. You will lie on a comfortable table designed especially for massage.

What do I wear during my massage?
We will give you the privacy to disrobe to your comfort level (to receive maximum benefits, we recommend that you disrobe to your underwear).  You will be covered with a sheet at all times, except the area being worked on.  If at any time you feel uncomfortable with the way you are draped/covered, please let us know and we will do all we can to ensure you feel comforable during your massage session.

What do I do during my massage therapy treatment?
Make yourself as comfortable as possible. Many people choose to close their eyes and relax completely during a session; others prefer to talk. It’s completely up to you; it is your massage, so whatever feels natural to you is the best way to relax.  You are welcome to ask questions at any time during your treatment.

How will my massage feel?
Many massage therapists use a form of Swedish massage, which is used by most practitioners. Your session will start with broad, flowing strokes called effleurage to help you relax and relieve muscle tension. As your body becomes relaxed, deeper tissue massage may be used in the areas of muscular tension. If you feel discomfort at any time please let us know.

How long will my massage treatment last?
Our full-body massage treatments last approximately one hour. A half-hour appointment only allows time for a partial massage session, such as neck and shoulders, back or legs and feet, however if you choose this type of treatment we will ask you to pick out the areas you would like us to concentrate on.  For best results, we recommend a 60- to 90-minute massage session.

How will I feel after my massage therapy treatment?
Most people feel very relaxed. After an initial period of feeling slowed down from their regular pace of life, many people experience increased energy, heightened awareness, and greater productivity which can last for days or weeks. Because toxins are released from your soft tissues during a massage we recommend that you drink 2 glasses of water immediately following your massage. We also recommend a hot bath to encourage the release of toxins that may have been stirred up from your massage treatment.  This will help your body relax.

Is a massage always appropriate?
No, there are several medical conditions that can make a massage inappropriate (it is called a contraindication). This is why we ask you to complete a health history form before we begin your session. We ask general health questions to make us aware of any conditions that could prevent us continuing with a treatment. It is very important that you inform us of any health problems or medications you are taking. For certain medical conditions, it is strongly advised that you receive a written recommendation for massage prior to any session. We may require a recommendation or approval from your doctor.

Many places in Calgary offer pedicures at a very cheap price, but sometimes paying for a cheap pedicure at a discount place is not always a good idea.  You can sometimes walk away with a lot more than what you thought you were paying for, including nail diseases and hepatitis from unsanitary tools that haven’t been cleaned and sterilized correctly.

If done properly, a pedicure can be an excellent way of keeping your feet looking and feeling great.  A pedicure cleans the feet, provides nail care and often includes a delightful foot and leg massage.  For people who have foot issues, a pedicure can also be very therapeutic.

When Gelous Spa was opened in Auburn Bay, Calgary we knew we wanted to give our clients the best experience ever.  Instead of rushing clients in and out of the door like some of the discount places in Calgary, our goal was to include so much more.  At Gelous Spa, as well as the usual callous removal and cuticle work, you also receive a relaxing exfoliating scrub, followed by a soothing mask with hot towels and afterwards a blissful reflexology massage on the legs and feet.  We also include colour gel toes, which last much longer than a regular polish. Goodbye chipping, hello long lasting colour. Gelous Spa offers the best pedicure in Calgary in terms of price and quality.

I can’t remember when I went for my first massage in Calgary, but I can remember one in particular that sticks in my mind.   It was at a place in Calgary, Alberta and it wasn’t the calming, relaxing massage I was hoping for.  Instead of feeling relaxed when I left my massage, I felt bruised and sore.  I didn’t realize that there were different kinds of massage, but I quickly learned that when I needed to improve my sense of well-being and overall wellness I was to ask for a relaxation massage.

When I became a Registered Massage Therapist and opened up my home based spa and massage studio in Auburn Bay, Calgary, I knew I wanted to be the kind of massage therapist who would get the knots out, but wouldn’t leave my clients walking out in agony.  My clients have reported that my massages are the most relaxing they have ever experienced.  They love that I am still able to get the knots out of their problem areas and still leave them relaxed.  However, some clients choose a therapeutic massage when they want me to focus on a specific area or problem.  My clients have been amazed that I have picked up on past injuries through massage.  My clients appreciate that I include hot stones and hot towels during all my treatments at no extra cost.  In Calgary, not many spas/Massage Studios offer such a service and great value for money.  I also offer regular specials and sometimes I offer free massages during prize giveaways.

Massage is so much more than just text book stuff and is so much more than “just a routine”.  To me, it’s about feeling a connection to the muscle to heal the body when working on clients.  I enjoy being a Registered Massage Therapist in Calgary and running my home based spa/massage studio in Auburn Bay.
